Chapter Sixteen
I was ready when Cassius showed up, not a hard feat since I didnât rest well.
âHeyâ¦â I greeted, letting them in. âCome with me. I have some things to show you.â
âI couldnât find anything useful last night,â he said as we gave each other a once over to make sure everyone was alive and uninjured as they had been the night before. Sorcha was behind him, holding a mug and quiet. Her eyes were attentive, but she seemed tired.
âYou okay?â I asked.
âTired,â she said with a small smile. âI stayed up later than he did.â She shook her head. âI didnât find anything either.â
âWell, letâs go to my office, and weâll talk. Raphael should be up soon.â As we passed Raphaelâs door, I knocked on it and heard him say something. âWeâll be in my office,â I explained through the door. âFind us when youâre ready.â
We were quiet as I showed them where they could sit, and Sorcha threw a glance back down the hallway.
âHow was he last night?â she asked this time.
âHe had new memories come back. I think thatâs why he was so quiet last night,â I explained. âIâm not going to force him to share those memories or share them without his permission, so youâll have to wait on him to offer.â
âThatâs okay,â Cassius said, not sitting down. He looked at my work board. âYou made a second one.â
âYeah. I needed to clear my thoughts, and this helps me weed out useless information and gets me to the parts that matter. I can see the entire situation unfold right in front of me.â
âWhere did you learn some of this?â I could hear the frown in his voice as he leaned close to the Board where I wrote down much of what Hisao told me.
âWeâll get to that,â I promised.
When Raphael walked into the office, I didnât say anything. He had woken me up twice the night before, screaming in his sleep from nightmares. His new memories must have given him a fresh new hell to relive. He fell into my seat behind the desk as though he owned it, also staring at the board. I watched him frown like Cassius and get back up.
âWhere did this come from?â he asked, pointing at my section labeled Cambions, everything I now knew about his kind.
âLast night, I talked to an old friend. Heâs close to Hasan and knows him very well. He offered me some information. Everything there is something Hasan told him. Orâ¦the Politician or General might have told him.â
âYou spoke to the Assassin,â Cassius said simply, turning to me, folding his arms behind his back. âHow was it talking to your old master?â
âHe was forthcoming about what he knew.â
âThe Assassinâ¦the werecat who trained you,â Raphael clarified, and I could hear the hope that he was right. âHisao.â
âLetâs not say his name for safety reasons,â I said quickly. âThereâs a reason Hasanâs children have nicknames, and weâre going to use them today because Iâm not supposed to know this information.
